Sony’s PC strategy is off to a sturdy start, with Days Gone and God of War closing on one million units apiece – and Horizon Zero Dawn already way over two million units. The company pulled a cool $80 million on PC in its fiscal year ending 31st March, 2022 – and it’s predicting revenue in the region of $300 million for the current business year.

This is all cumulative, of course, so catalogue content will continue to sell – but it suggests the organisation has more major PC ports in the pipeline. It sounds like the company’s upcoming live service titles – of which it expects to release two more during the current fiscal year – will release day-and-date on PC, as well as PS5 and PS4. Of course, acquisition target Bungie could also play a role here.

Thu, 26 May 2022 00:45:00 GMT Around 20% of Sony's Output Could Be Mobile by 2025 As company looks beyond console.

Sony is not just bringing its games to PC but also to mobile, as it looks to extend the PlayStation experience beyond the boundaries of its traditional console walled garden. As part of an investor relations briefing, it revealed plans for roughly 20 per cent of its software output to be mobile by 2025 – a significant figure. It’s important to note that this is represented as a percentage of releases, and does not necessarily represent a decline in traditional console games as a consequence.

Nevertheless, this is an initiative that the platform holder has been talking about for some time, but outside of WipEout Merge, we’re yet to really see much activity. The company elaborated a little more on its plans, however, announcing plans to partner with “successful mobile developers” in order to “extend our franchises more players and regions” while still remaining “faithful to the values of PlayStation Studios”.

Thu, 26 May 2022 00:30:00 GMT More Than Half of PlayStation's Investment Could Be in Live Service Games by 2025 Follow the money.

Sony really isn’t kidding around with this live service strategy it’s been blathering about. As part of an investor relations presentation, the organisation estimated that more than half of its investment into PS5 could be live service by 2025, as it looks to capture growth in the lucrative sector. For those not clued up with the lingo, live service means titles like Fortnite, which adapt and change over time.

The platform holder spent a large chunk of the briefing defending its position, showing a dizzying amount of data which backs up its direction. Notably, it pointed out how an enormous chunk of its revenue now comes from add-on sales in live service games, with free-to-play revenue alone up from 5 per cent of PS Store’s total spend in 2016 to 25 per cent in 2021.

Thu, 26 May 2022 00:15:00 GMT PS5 Supply Issues a 'Top Priority' for Sony as It Aims to Overtake PS4 Again in 2024 Sony taking steps to sort things out.

It comes as absolutely no surprise, but Sony really wants to sort out these ongoing PS5 stock issues. The current-gen console is still being hamstrung by problems in the supply chain — both at manufacturing and shipping levels.

The Japanese giant calls the continued supply issues a "top priority" in its latest business overview — but it expects things to get a lot better in the relatively near future. It points out that — as we already knew — the PS5 has now fallen behind in terms of sales when compared to the PS4's first couple of years on the market. However, in the PS5's third year — which would begin this November, stretching into 2023 — Sony hopes to have the current-gen box back on track. Then, in 2024, the PS5 should once again overtake its predecessor.

Thu, 26 May 2022 00:00:00 GMT PSVR2 Will Have Over 20 Major Launch Titles Welcome to the next dimension.

PSVR2 will launch with more than 20 games, from both first-party studios and third-party partners. While the platform holder stopped short of sharing any specific names, it was confident enough to drop the tidbit during an investor relations briefing which outlined the PlayStation division’s strategy for the near future.

Sony earmarked PSVR2 as a point of commercial expansion for the company, and it believes the device’s new motion controls, ease-of-use, and industry-leading features – like eye-tracking – will help it to draw significant revenue. Horizon Call of the Mountain – the virtual reality spin-off developed by Firesprite and Guerrilla – was pictured as part of the presentation.

Wed, 25 May 2022 23:15:00 GMT Retro Shooter Jim Power Returns in PS4 Collection Includes long-lost SEGA Genesis version.

These retro compilations that keep coming out are not only getting cooler – they’re also getting more obscure. Take the 1993 shooter Jim Power: The Lost Dimension in 3-D, which didn’t even deploy in Europe. The game’s getting ported to the PS4 – but even better, it’ll come bundled with a long-lost SEGA Genesis version which never actually saw the light of day until last year. And, if all of that wasn’t enough, developer PIKO Interactive has created a brand-new, bespoke NES version, which it’ll throw in as well.

The press release explains: “The evil alien Vaprak is threatening to destroy the earth, which is the last planet that stands between it and the entry to the 5th dimension. If Vaprak succeeds, his species will flood the galaxy and all will be lost. It is up to Jim Power to infiltrate and slay the evil. Originally released in the ‘90s Jim Power was hailed for its outstanding graphics and challenging gameplay. Now Jim is back and ready to do it all over again.”

Wed, 25 May 2022 23:00:00 GMT First PS1 on PS5, PS4 Analysis Drops, And There Are Highs and Lows Overall, it could be better.

It’s been a few days since the new tiers of PS Plus launched in parts of Asia, and that means gamers have already got their hands on some of the retro titles included within the list of All PS Plus Games. Sony is selling its PS Plus Premium tier on the strength of its classic games catalogue – although it does offer a selection of other perks, including cloud streaming and game trials.

How are the retro games looking, then? Well, firstly, there’s been some confusion over the PS2 games it seems. These are not strictly “new” releases, but are instead games that were already ported to the PS4 a few years ago. Sony added Trophies to these titles, but the well quickly dried of new releases. As far as we can tell, these haven’t been touched.

Wed, 25 May 2022 19:30:00 GMT PS5 Pro Touted for 2023 by TV Company, But Seems Highly Unlikely Just a guesstimate.

TCL Technology, a television and electronics manufacturer, appeared to allude to the release of a hypothetical PS5 Pro during a presentation this week. The supercharged system, spotted as part of a PowerPoint by Polish website PPE and shared by journalist Tom Henderson, is touted by the firm for a 2023 or 2024 release date. It’s also hypothesised that it could support 8K resolution.

Of course, this is clearly just a guesstimate, and the company is unlikely to actually have any inside information. Our guess is that it’s looked at the PS4’s roadmap, and attributed the same to the PS5. However, this generation looks likely to be a lot longer, as PS5 stock shortages mean that the base model is still not readily available – and that’s unlikely to change for some time.

Wed, 25 May 2022 15:30:00 GMT Forspoken Gets an 18 Rating in Europe, Suggests Release Date Will Stick Magic touch.

Forspoken just got an age rating here in Europe from PEGI (that's the region's ratings board, for those who might not know). It's an 18, which is equivalent to 'Mature' in the US. PEGI's description highlights mature themes such as suicide, consumption of alcohol, and strong language. It's not a huge surprise to see Forspoken slapped with an 18, but there are wider implications.

Indeed, the fact that the game's been rated does suggest that development is approaching its final phase, and that its current release date of 11th October will stick. There was a rather flimsy rumour going around earlier this week that Square Enix could delay Forspoken in order to make room for Final Fantasy XVI — but that always seemed a little unrealistic. Certainly not impossible, but it would be a strange move from a company that will have already mapped out its marketing plans for the rest of 2022.

Wed, 25 May 2022 14:00:00 GMT Them's Fightin' Herds Is an Animal-Based Fighting Game Flocking to PS5, PS4 Get ready for the mane event.

Them's Fightin' Herds, an excellently named indie fighting game, has been popular on PC for a while, but it's time it was moved to a larger field. Publisher Modus Games and developer Mane6 have announced the title is coming to consoles, arriving on PS5 and PS4 this Fall, available digitally and physically.

The game is a 2D fighter with two key differences. First, it looks like a Cartoon Network show. Second, the playable characters are all four-legged animals. Yes, you'll get to grips with the likes of Velvet the deer, Paprika the alpaca, and Tianhuo, a half dragon, half horse. It's an unusual premise, but it's a well-received game with impressive reviews, so it seems to have gameplay chops to back it up.

We say it all the time, but this really is a thing now: another month, another No Man's Sky update. Named Leviathan, this is the game's 20th overall post-launch update and the seventh Expedition. This one takes the form of a sort of rogue-like experience with a time-looping curse you must put a stop to. "Not even Nada and Polo know the cause of this temporal abnormality, but all the clues indicate a link to a great space creature, The Leviathan."

If you successfully complete the Expedition, you'll be rewarded with the Whalestalker Cloak, an Organic Frigate for your base, and a Temporal Starship Trail. This particular mission will be available for around six weeks.

Wed, 25 May 2022 11:00:00 GMT Review: Sniper Elite 5 (PS5) - Dense Stealth Sandbox Shooter Is a Real French Fancy C'est magnifique.

Sniper Elite is a series so confident in its execution that Rebellion doesn’t really need to reinvent the wheel. The latest instalment, Sniper Elite 5, takes the gravel-voiced Karl Fairburne and his immaculately shaped short-back-and-sides to Nazi-occupied France, where he uncovers a MacGuffin plot called Operation Kraken which threatens to turn the tides of the Second World War. Armed with his trusty rifle and unwavering willpower, the seasoned veteran embarks on yet another one-man crusade to halt the Axis – one pair of bollocks at a time.

While the core gameplay remains tried-and-true, the release’s eight sandbox stages are denser than they’ve ever been. There’s no doubt the British developer has been peeking at Hitman’s playbook, and the result is a versatile military crusade that shines in repeated playthroughs. Take the gorgeous Beaumont-Saint-Denis stage, for example, which has been inspired by the real-life tidal island of Mont-Saint-Michel. This architectural wonder is bursting with gameplay opportunities, spanning underground infiltration points to turrets that provide devastating sightlines – exactly how you approach is up to you.

The brand new PS Plus tiers have now launched in some Asian countries, and it's on the cusp of a Western release too. Wed, 25 May 2022 00:30:00 GMT PS Plus Premium's Horizon Forbidden West Trial Lasts Five Hours on PS5, PS4 Enough time to defeat the Daunt.

One of the perks that’s perhaps going under the radar with PS Plus Premium, the top tier of Sony’s subscription service, are the Game Trials. Now these aren’t quite what was originally rumoured: the functionality doesn’t expand to the entire PS Store, and appears much more curated. But they are surprisingly generous – in the case of Horizon Forbidden West, the platform holder will allow you to play for five hours before asking you to cough up.

Now just to get the small-print out of the way first – because someone in the comments will inevitably bring it up – your game time only counts while you’re actually playing, so you get a full five hours of playtime. You can spread this over as many different sessions as you like, too – and your Trophies and save data will, of course, carry across to the full product should you decide to purchase it. So everything’s being handled as it should.

Wed, 25 May 2022 00:15:00 GMT Assassin's Creed Origins 60FPS PS5 Patch Expected to Drop in June Bayek on track.

Well, for a minute there, it was looking like we would all be playing Assassin's Creed Origins at 60 frames-per-second on our PS5s this week — but that seems very unlikely at this point. It all started with a new patch for Origins being spotted on PlayStation servers, which usually suggests an imminent release. However, Ubisoft's yet to bring it up in an official capacity, and there's no sign of the update going live at the time of writing.

So what's the hold up? Three words: Xbox Game Pass. Ubisoft confirmed last week that Origins would be heading to Microsoft's subscription service on the 7th June (as reported by our pals at Pure Xbox) — and we're willing to bet that's also when its PS5 patch will finally drop. What's more, the 7th is a Tuesday, and that's almost always the day when Ubisoft refreshes its games with updates and weekly challenges.

Wed, 25 May 2022 00:00:00 GMT PSVR2 Games from Wraith: The Oblivion Team in Development #MoreThanOne.

Apex Construct and Wraith: The Oblivion - Afterlife developer Fast Travel Games has dropped a not so subtle hint it has multiple PSVR2 projects in the works. Taking to Twitter, the team posted a picture of the all-new headset along with the PSVR2 logo and its own branding. Accompanying the image is the text: "We’re just going to leave this here... 👀"

Using the hashtag #morethanone in the tweet, it's assumed the studio has more than one PSVR2 title in development. Alongside the two aforementioned games, Fast Travel Games has also developed a VR version of Cities: Skylines and the music-focused Virtuoso, both for Meta Quest devices. It's then helping out with the development of Budget Cuts 2. Fast Travel Games could simply be porting these titles to PSVR2, or producing something completely original.

Tue, 24 May 2022 23:30:00 GMT PSVR's Firewall Zero Hour Targets Tenth and Final Season Operation X.

Sony doesn’t have the best track record for ongoing online multiplayer game support, but credit must go to the platform holder for not pulling the plug on First Contact Entertainment’s tactical shooter, Firewall Zero Hour. The PSVR exclusive has been taking down targets for almost four years now, and will receive its tenth (and final) seasonal update from today.

Before we delve any deeper, it’s important to stress that the title will remain online for the foreseeable future, and just because the developer is moving on to new projects, it doesn’t mean it’ll be taken offline. This final update just marks the end of new content releases, and it’s impressive it’s had a shelf life this long.
