Update: A little more clarification on the contents of the pre-order packs and Digital Deluxe Edition for Sonic Origins have emerged courtesy of the game's Japanese website. Firstly, the Mirror Mode can be unlocked through gameplay, so you get early access if you pre-order. The coins, too, are for use in the Vault.
The extra songs included with the Music Pack span Sonic Spinball, Sonic 3D Blast, and Knuckles' Chaotix. So there you go.
Original Story: Sonic Origins, the compilation collection of SEGA Genesis classics, will officially spin-dash to the PlayStation 5 and PS4 from 23rd June – albeit with a catalogue of pricey options. The core game will set you back $39.99 on the PS Store, and will include Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles. It’s worth noting that two of these titles can already be enjoyed as part of the much cheaper SEGA Genesis Classics.
There are some perks and bonuses here, though: SEGA’s added new animated cut-scenes, which are teased in the trailer above. The publisher’s also added new modes: Classic and Anniversary. While the former, naturally, replicates the 16-bit originals, the latter offers unlimited lives and wide-screen support; we’re assuming this has been designed with newer players in mind, as the old-school Sonic the Hedgehog titles can get tough at times.

You’ll be able to collect coins as you progress to spend on content in an in-game vault, and there’ll even be little gameplay missions to complete, separate from the core campaigns. If you pre-order you’ll receive the Start Dash Pack, which comes with bonus coins for the aforementioned museum, Mirror Mode, and a letterbox background. Here’s where it gets weird, though, there’ll be two extra DLC packs: the Premium Fun Packs and the Classic Music Pack.
If you plump up for the $44.99 Digital Deluxe Edition, you’ll get both of these from the outset. The perks include Hard Missions, some additional animations, and music from the Genesis originals. The additional music will cost $3.99 if you choose to purchase it separately. So, it’s quite a complicated setup.
It looks like a complete collection, and clearly a lot of work’s gone into it, but it’s also pretty pricey. We understand there’s a new generation of Sonic the Hedgehog fans now, perhaps inspired to play the games by the character’s recent movie success, but are you willing to plump up $39.99 for these legendary Genesis platformers? Lock your Sonic 3 cartridge into Sonic & Knuckles in the comments section below.

Ridiculous pricing, just emulate them like everyone else 👍
So they're locking stuff behind a preorder wall that should be in this collection by default?
Actually all of it should, maybe barring the music pack. If that's the only way to get around the Sonic 3 music issues, then so be it, but everything else should be included by default.
$40 for this? SEGA must be high on something. I was actually looking forward to this few days ago when I saw the first article. Brought back many many memories. But at this price, thanks, I'm good.
Nope. Love these games but not like this
Definitely a bit higher in price than I expected but at the very least it sounds like they did put some actual effort into this. At least it's a better deal than Mario 3D Allstars was though and unlike that one you can wait for a sale if the initial asking price is too high.
I will definitely buy this just maybe not right away.
@Milt Yeah, there's two editions: Standard and Digital Deluxe. Then there's a pre-order pack and two DLC packs.
If you pre-order Digital Deluxe ($44.99) you get everything.
I'm in. Classic Sonic games in a new way for the first time in 25-30 years? Yeah son.
Given the modern gaming is on the rocks, I'm not surprised to see more compilations like this. Between this and Ninja Turtles Cowabunga Collection, I'm set until modern gaming can catch up and release something worth my attention.
Berdung!!!!! Nope.
Definitely a bit pricey, not to mention I already have like 10 different ways to play Sonic 1 and 2. That Sonic Mega Collection released way back in the PS2/GC/Xbox era seem like the better deal.
After the TMNT collection and how many games were included, this is disappointing. Missing the master drive games (calling something origins and not providing the actual origins), Sonic Spinball, and I'm sure lots of other games from the genesis and master drive era.
FINALLY IT'S HERE GIMMIE, GIMME, GIMMIE!!!!! ^__^
This is bonkers. Why 5 tiers? They are just 4 genesis games and 1 Sega cd game
@PlayStationGamer3919 Two are DLC packs but it's a bit messy agreed.
Way too expensive, especially when the sega collection is the same price (if not cheaper) and features 5 times as many games (including half of whats available here)... besides, I'd only be getting it for sonic 3 and knuckles
Loved the headline. I half expected the title to be called: "Sonic - Pricey Edition"
Seems like a cheap ploy to extract money from recent movie success. But it will work.
Older fans, like myself, will simply emulate the original titles and that's enough for me, but I guess some die hard fans will appreciate new movies and widescreen modes, though the cost for them is significant.
It's a bit too expensive really, but it'll be nice to have easy access to these widescreen versions of the games at least.
@get2sammyb and that’s without an physical release. I cannot imagine what they do with an physical release of it
Put a £1,000 price tag with a Sonic NFT and I’m in 😜
Probably getting it regardless. With all the open world games this year, I’m starving to say I’ve beaten a few games this year and I know with Cowabunga Collection and this, I’ll be able to checkmark that psychological urge and have a great time doing it. Lol. Besides, it’s been ages since I’ve played Sonic 3 or CD.
As far as I'm aware all these games are on "Sega mega drive ultimate collection" on the PS3 which I have.
Those sorts of messy grids detailing the various editions and DLC make me hesitant to purchase this. Spending time trying to figure out the correct way to buy this is hassle.
I'm chuffed they're all widescreen but that pricing is outrageous, ableit totally in line with Sega's exploitative attitude when it comes to their mascot; the hardcore fans will eat it up regardless. I will wait for heavy sale.
Especially considering Sonic Mega Collection on GC came in at the same price and featured more titles.
Way too pricey for a digital game, release it physically and I will buy it but not digitally thank you.
Pre-ordered it. £32.99 here in the UK.
My first ever game played was Sonic The Hedgehog on Master System II
Just play the Sega mega drive collection instead, it's probably a lot cheaper now and has a lot more games.
Characters animation in the main menu is dlc? Wtf?
Do we know if these are the Christian Whitehead remasters?
I dunno $10 a game isn't the worst, but the value just doesn't feel there. There needs to be a little more, throw in sonic 3-D blast and sonic spinball.
On the one hand I look and my collection of $8 a piece bare bones Arcade Archives releases and the pricing isn’t so bad. Then I look at Capcom’s Arcade Stadium with 32 games and plenty of bells and whistles for the same price as Sonic Origins and I think Sega could do a little better.
Hmm, this all seem unnecessary. Hard Mode dlc? Fun. I'll wait for a deep discount.
@tinCAT-zero Aye but sonic3 + knuckles are now the combo game 😍😍😍
Awesome, but sucks they’re locking stuff that should be included behind a paywall.
Strange how people view pricing these days. Basically they're releasing the set of games for the same price as the original cartridge would have cost. Or, put another way, using inflation, this set works out at £48 cheaper than the original cartridge. As that would have been roughly £88 today. Gasp and scream at the outrageous pricing of those £70 PS5 titles. 🤣
For 50 quid they could have at least included games from the sonic gems collection, this feels like a rip off for a couple of sonic games, no thanks sega
@wiiware greed at the most high level! 😤😤
The bonuses are ridiculous!
They definitely overexplained this, making it seem needlessly convoluted at a glance. The 3 columns in the middle weren't necessary lol.
@Jayslow It does provide the actual origins. Sonic 1 on Mega Drive came first.
Sonic CD is an unspeakably loathsome pile of garbage, a waking nightmare representing everything that's wrong with gaming, art, and humanity in general, and should be permanently erased from this collection before it's too late.
But otherwise sure, I guess I can buy these games again. Eleventh time's the charm, right?
